An extraordinary one-of-a-kind antique French winged extender, converted by Lucille London from an original circa 1900 brooch.
With an incredible 84.5mm wingspan, the design features two exceptionally long, outstretched wings, beautifully modelled in 18ct gold with individually chased feathers and wonderful depth and movement. At their centre sits an oval opal cabochon, alive with flashes of green, blue and warmer fire, topped by a tiny rose-cut diamond for the prettiest finishing detail.
The original jewel was created as a brooch, but its dramatic proportions were simply too good not to bring into the modern jewellery wardrobe. We have converted it into a completely unique necklace extender using handcrafted 18ct gold O-rings at either end, allowing chains, dog clips and bolt rings to be connected in endless combinations. Worn simply across the neck, it creates an incredible winged collar effect, while layered into a neckmess it becomes an unexpectedly striking centrepiece.
The original French eagle’s-head hallmark for 18ct gold has been retained, with a second indistinct punch alongside which may be the original maker’s mark. French makers traditionally used a separate responsibility or maker’s punch in addition to the state guarantee mark.
The piece remains in very good antique condition. There is evidence of an historic repair to the reverse of one wing, entirely in keeping with its age; this is not noticeable from the front, and the wing remains secure. The opal has a small surface nibble to its girdle, partially concealed by the setting, consistent with age and wear.
A fabulous piece of antique French craftsmanship, reimagined as a true OOAK Lucille London extender - dramatic on its own, but even better when completely overloaded with chains.
