A beautifully substantial antique long guard chain, crafted in 18ct gold and formed from tactile round belcher links. The chain has a fabulous yellow-gold tone, enhanced by a wonderful natural patina visible between some of the links - a lovely reminder of its age and history.
With an impressive weight of 40.30 grams, every link is solid rather than hollow, giving the chain a luxurious feel, fluid movement and reassuring quality in the hand.
Measuring 34.5 inches, she can be worn at her full length as a classic long guard chain or wrapped twice around the neck to create a shorter, layered look. The versatile 9mm bolt ring can be positioned at the front, side or back and allows pendants, charms and antique treasures to be clipped directly onto it. As the bolt ring can also be fastened through the individual chain links, pendants may be suspended at different points along the chain, offering numerous styling possibilities.
The softly rounded belcher links have a satisfyingly substantial profile while remaining incredibly wearable at 3.25mm wide. Worn alone, the chain makes an understated yet luxurious statement; layered with other antique chains or laden with charms, she becomes the perfect foundation for a one-of-a-kind neck mess.
The bolt ring is stamped “18” for 18-carat gold and remains in excellent working order with a strong spring. The entire chain is in excellent antique condition, with beautifully preserved links, gentle surface wear and the natural patina expected from a piece of this age.
Long guard chains were fashionable throughout the Victorian period, originally worn to suspend watches, lorgnettes, keys and other personal accessories. This weighty example dates to the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, circa 1890–1910.
