A wonderfully collectable Cartier ‘I Love You’ spinner pendant, crafted in 18ct white gold and dating to circa 1990s.
The wonderfully clever kinetic design features a circular disc suspended within an arched frame, with portions of the letters engraved across each side. Spin the disc and the fragmented lettering visually combines to reveal the hidden message: “I LOVE YOU.”
Although this particular example dates from around the turn of the 21st century, the idea has much earlier roots within Cartier's own design history. Belle Époque Cartier examples survive using the same revolving-disc concept to reveal the words “I Love You”, making this later version a particularly charming continuation of one of the house's more whimsical sentimental designs.
A particularly useful feature is the original Cartier clasp bail, allowing the pendant to be clipped directly onto a chain, bracelet or individual chain link rather than requiring the chain to be threaded through it. The clasp is signed “Cartier © 750” and bears the serial number EL6446. The fixed connecting bail bears the French eagle's head assay mark for 18ct gold, alongside “750” and a further partially legible mark.
In very good vintage condition, with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The white gold appears beautifully bright and silvery in direct light, taking on a slightly softer grey tone in lower light. It's difficult to determine whether the piece was originally rhodium plated and this has worn over time, or whether the gold was intended to retain its natural white-gold colour.
A fabulous Cartier piece that's both wonderfully understated and unexpectedly romantic - and particularly fun worn from a chunky chain or clipped amongst other charms.
